The eighteenth birthday marks the end of childhood, and the beginning of adulthood in many parts of the world. An 18th birthday present could reflect this transition in life.

As childhood ends, a thoughtful 18th birthday present is letting them know what was happening in the world on the day they were born. This can be done by ordering an old newspaper from a publisher. Another way of letting them know what was happening around the time of their birth is to give them a CD of the top 40 pop songs from the year they were born.

Is there a more interesting or exotic cuisine they would like to try that isn’t pizza, burgers or fries? You could take it a step further and make it a weekend excursion to a location or event that captures their interest. The eighteenth birthday can be a time for gifts of more classic and grown up jewelry, that they can wear throughout their life. For young men this could be the time for them to get their first tie clip and cuff links. In this day and age electronics are coveted gifts. What better 18th birthday present is there than receiving that first digital camera, cell phone, Xbox or |Wii? If they already have these items, find out if there are any accessories (such as an iPod docking station), that they would like to receive. Another electronics gift is not the gift itself, but an upgrade in the item or service they already have.
Living away from home
The eighteenth year is often a time that many 18 year olds leave home and start living on their own by going away to college, or getting a place of their own. A good idea for an 18th birthday present for the young adult living on their own, are things that make life easier. Appliances that can be used in a dorm room or a new apartment are a coffee maker, a toaster oven or a mini fridge. Things that make an apartment seem more like home are extra sheets, towels and blankets.
Age of Majority Gifts
A humorous 18th birthday present is a bunch of the things that they can’t buy, or participate in, until turning 18. The most obvious one is bottles of alcohol, but other things such as lottery tickets, coffee gift cards (if they haven’t discovered caffeine yet), or going to a casino for a stint of gambling, or a tattoo parlor might mark passing into adulthood.
